Research has shown that approximately one third of people who are 65 years old will have some type of foot pain. The feet can become stiff and achy, which may be a result of becoming more sedentary than in past years. A common foot condition is a bunion, which is generally caused by wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. It is characterized by a bony lump that forms on the side of the big toe, and may cause pain while walking. Additionally, a corn can develop for the same reason, and despite its small size, may cause considerable discomfort. The skin on the heels may become dry, and cracked heels is a condition that is common as the aging process occurs. Severe cracks in the skin are called fissures, and may bleed, if not promptly treated. Having an ingrown toenail can wreak havoc in attempting to complete daily activities, as a result of the pain it can cause. This is defined as the nail growing into the skin, instead of over it, and surgery may be necessary for a complete recovery. If you are in this age group and are experiencing any kind of foot conditions, please consult with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can provide you with effective relief options.

If you need your feet checked, contact Stephen Boykins, DPM of SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs and provide you with quality treatment.

Geriatrics and Podiatry
When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health if the necessary steps are not taken to alleviate the problems.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseased can affect your overall health. Having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities or may decrease your willingness to do the things that you need to do.

Visiting Your Geriatrician
As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups to ensure that you are doing the best you can to take care of your health. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns or any other irregularities.

Taking Care of Elderly Feet
Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer often. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock is, the higher the possibility there will be that there is bacteria there. Wear fresh socks and make sure they fit properly.

Proper foot health means that you can have a more active lifestyle and you will not be bogged down by pain. Foot health also leads to good circulation, which is paramount for overall health.

Foot Pain May Increase With Age

Having any type of foot pain can cause difficulty in completing even the smallest tasks. The number of foot occurrences can increase as the aging process occurs and approximately 45 percent of people who are over 45 years old will experience some form of foot pain. Poor circulation can occur with decreased blood flow, and this often affects the feet. Age can weaken the immune system which may increase the risk of developing toenail fungus, cracked heels, and athlete’s foot. These types of conditions can also occur from poor foot hygiene, and this can be common among middle-aged or older people. Additionally, foot pain may develop from extra weight gain that might occur when one retires. All these factors may be remedied by implementing specific foot stretches into your exercise regime to help strengthen the feet. If you have foot pain, please seek the help of a podiatrist who can effectively determine what the cause is and offer you the correct treatment options.

Reasons Why Cuboid Syndrome Can Occur

The foot condition known as cuboid syndrome is considered to be a partial dislocation of the cuboid bone. It is one of seven tarsal bones that are above the ankle on the outside of the foot, and it may move out of alignment between the heel and cuboid bone. This foot condition can occur after an ankle sprain has happened, or excess pressure for other reasons may cause cuboid syndrome. Additionally, weakened foot muscles may literally buckle under exertion, possibly causing this syndrome to occur. Many patients choose to have their cuboid bone manipulated back into alignment, or to have their foot taped to hold the bone in place. The foot can become stronger when specific exercises and stretches are performed, which may help to prevent future bouts with cuboid syndrome. If you have developed this condition, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can begin the correct treatment method for you.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with Stephen Boykins, DPM from SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

What Does a Podiatrist Do?

Keeping your feet healthy is extremely important. To ensure proper foot health, seeing a podiatrist on a regular basis is important, especially if you have neuropathy, peripheral artery disease, or any other ailment that affects the feet. Podiatrists are doctors who specialize in conditions of the toes, feet, and ankles. Among the many conditions they are trained to deal with are ingrown toenails, heel and arch pain, gait problems, and sprains. They are also trained to work with patients who have diabetes and arthritis. Recommendations from a podiatrist may include prescription medication, exercise plans, and custom orthotics to correct biomechanical issues. A podiatrist can use imaging tests and other methods to determine the extent and severity of your foot problems. If you are seeing a podiatrist for the first visit, it is a good idea to wear the shoes you normally wear, so a diagnosis of foot alignment and wear patterns can be conducted.

If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Feel free to contact Stephen Boykins, DPM from SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.
