Facts About Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most commonly reported cause of heel discomfort. This condition targets the plantar fascia, which is a broad ligament that extends from the heel to toes. When it is overused, such as from running for long periods of time, tiny tears can result. This leads to irritation and inflammation and ultimately causes heel pain. The discomfort is more intense in the early morning, but can gradually subside as the day progresses due to the warming and stretching effects on the fascia. Problems with the foot's structure, such as flat feet or high arches, can contribute to plantar fasciitis, but its most common cause is repetitive use. It also can result from prolonged standing or wearing unsupportive footwear. Performing certain stretching exercises, refraining from walking barefoot, wearing appropriate footwear, and periodically resting the feet can help to alleviate the pain. An effective simple morning exercise involves flexing the foot ten times before getting out of bed, or after sitting for an extended period of time. In cases of persistent pain, custom orthotics for cushioning and night splints may be introduced. In more extreme scenarios, corticosteroid injections can offer pain relief. For help in managing the pain of plantar fasciitis, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain, with a preponderance of cases in those aged 45 to 65 years old. This condition involves chronic pain on the bottom of the heel where the plantar fascia, the band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to toes, attaches to the heel. The pain is more severe with the first few steps after sleep or sitting for a prolonged time. It gets worse when standing or walking for long periods and relief is most often found by resting. Risk factors include obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, arch issues, wearing ill-fitted shoes, and standing on the feet for long periods. Understanding the enduring effects of routine footwear on this condition can be helpful, as slight shoe changes might alleviate discomfort and disability. Footwear that works better to prevent plantar fasciitis involves some heel height but not much, hard, well-cushioned soles, and insoles with built-in arch support. If you would like to understand more about how appropriate footwear can calm down plantar fasciitis, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss this issue further.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Stretches for Better Ankle Mobility

Improving ankle mobility is vital for overall flexibility and performance, whether you're an athlete or simply seeking better movement. Strengthening and stretching exercises can prevent injuries, enhance walking posture, and maintain strong knee and hip muscles while alleviating ankle pain. Beneficial exercises include ankle circles, single-leg balances, and toe raises. Ankle circles involve rotating your ankle on a rolled-up towel or foam roller in clockwise and counterclockwise circles. For single-leg balances, stand with feet shoulder-width apart, arms out to the sides, while lifting one foot off the ground. Toe raises require standing on a step on the balls of your feet, rising onto your toes, and lowering the foot below step level. These exercises promote better movement awareness, reduce the risk of ankle sprains, and establish a strong, stable foundation. For personalized guidance, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist to assess your feet and ankles and receive tailored care.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Stephen Boykins, DPM from SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Causes of Adult Acquired Flat Feet

Fallen arches is a condition that is termed posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, or PTTD. It also may be referred to as adult-acquired flat feet. Many people with flat feet suffer little or no problems. But others may experience pain if a tendon in the arch of the foot becomes inflamed, overstretched, or torn. The problem starts with the posterior tibial tendon, which begins in the leg, runs through the ankle, and connects to the bones in the bottom of the foot. When it is damaged, it can result in flat feet. This type of occurrence is far more prevalent in women, especially those between 40 and 60 years old. It is believed to be the result of overuse of the posterior tibial tendon. It is also common among runners and athletes who play high-impact sports. Other causes include diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. Symptoms include pain on the inside of the foot and ankle, accompanied by swelling, redness, and warmth. Symptoms usually spike after engaging in physical activity, such as jumping and running. For more information on this type of injury, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Stephen Boykins, DPM from SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

The Importance of Proper Shoe Fitting

A proper shoe fit is vital for maintaining foot health and overall comfort. The feet should be measured regularly as shoe size can change over time and with age. Shoes should have ample space in the toe box, allowing the toes to wiggle comfortably, and they should provide adequate arch support and heel stability. Avoid footwear that feels excessively tight or loose, as these may lead to painful issues like blisters, corns, and calluses. When trying on shoes, it is important to walk around and check for any discomfort or friction. People with specific foot conditions or concerns should opt for shoes that cater to those needs, such as orthopedic or wide-width options. If you have complex foot issues, chronic pain, or need additional help selecting properly fitting shoes, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for personalized advice.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Stephen Boykins, DPM from SoCal Podiatry, P.C.. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.
